Thousands Join Pro-Palestinian Demonstrations as Organisers Vow to Persist in Activism

Tens of thousands gathered across Australia at pro-Palestinian protests, with organizers vowing to keep demonstrating after a ceasefire deal brokered by the American leader in Gaza showed early signs of stability.

Sydney Demonstration Draws Large Crowd

In the harbor city, the activist collective announced a crowd of 30,000 had demonstrated from the public gardens to Belmore Park in the central business district after a scheduled protest to the famous building was banned by the legal authorities in recent days.

NSW police assessed 8,000 people participated in the local rally, with a representative reporting there had been "no significant incidents".

Australian Rallies Remember Occasion

Demonstrations were also held in southern city, Queensland's capital and Perth on the weekend to mark two years of killing in Gaza after armed incidents on 7 October 2023 resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths in Israel.

"In terms of the movement, we'll definitely persist to protest for a free Palestine... for local governance, for support to reach and for Palestinians to be able to rebuild Gaza," said one organiser.

Varied Responses to Ceasefire Agreement

Various participants expressed hope that the agreement could establish stability. Several expressed concerns of Trump's involvement and called on activists to maintain pressure on the national authorities to sanction Israel and end the trade in military goods.

Shamikh Badra, a Palestinian Australian based in Australia, expressed he hoped the arrangement could permit him to reunite with his aging parent, who is currently in the region without medical attention, to his current home, and to discover and lay to rest his family members, who have been missing since 2023.

Local Jewish Population Holds Commemoration

Meanwhile, many individuals participated in a Jewish memorial service on that night in eastern Sydney to remember the occasion of 7 October. A participant, the relative of a victim, an Australian citizen who was a casualty of the events, was arranged to talk.

There were hopes for soon return of the captives still held in the region and the victims of the attacks. The foreign envoy, the official, paid tribute to the strength of victims. The participants reacted negatively when he referenced the Australian prime minister and the foreign minister.

Flotilla Participants Describe Ordeals

The city's demonstration earlier heard from speakers including multiple nationals freed from custody after the halting of the activist vessels in recent weeks.

Surya McEwen, his arm in a sling after it was reportedly injured in an Israeli prison, told that not enough was known about the peace agreement. Global humanitarian groups, including Unrwa and Unicef, were preparing to enter Gaza.

"While circumstances persist where there's a severe and prohibited barrier on Gaza," commented the participant, flotilla activists would continue to try to transport assistance via water.

Another participant, who arrived home on Friday, gave an emotional speech describing his detention with 83 other men in a detention facility.

Official Comments

The elected official Jenny Leong informed attendees: "It's unacceptable to permit a situation where American leadership shapes the destiny of Palestinians to be the nature of existence we tolerate."

A different coordinator who submitted the original application to demonstrate at the famous location claimed that the participants could have peacefully gone to the iconic waterfront location. The senior police representative had previously stated the judicial body that the plan had "disaster written all over it".

The coordinator stated at the event: "Every single time the authorities try to restrict our rallies or take us to the supreme court, it wakes up a lot of people... to the importance of gathering and resist these measures."
