The England head coach expressed his disappointment that the Three Lions team did not get more support from the Wembley spectators during their decisive triumph over Wales on Thursday night.
Tuchel was happy to see his squad maintain their winning momentum, with strikes from Morgan Rogers, Ollie Watkins, and Bukayo Saka inside the first 20 minutes effectively ending the contest. But, he was unhappy with the energy at the national stadium.
“We had one and a half training days to prepare against a organized team and we excelled,” Tuchel stated. “We could have been 5-0 up at half-time. We couldn’t score the fourth and fifth ones. The stadium was silent. There was no any energy back from the stands. We did everything to win.”
“What more can you provide in 20 minutes? We prevented them escape. When you only hear just the Welsh supporters for 30 minutes, it’s regrettable because the squad deserved greater backing today.”
“I stand by this statement. We cannot do more than being 3-0 in a rivalry match. I hoped for a bit more backing in moments where it gets difficult.”
“After halftime, to support us, there was excessive backing for the opposition. It could have helped us to recharge, but that’s the way it went and that is it.”
Apart from potentially starting a dispute among supporters, the manager also caused a stir by excluding Bellingham and Foden from his team selection. But the choice was justified by Rogers excelling in the attacking midfield role and getting his maiden goal for his country.
“He plays his game,” Tuchel said. “He operates as an attacking midfielder and he is vying for his spot.”
Craig Bellamy hopes that Wales, who host a strong Belgian side in a key World Cup qualifier on next week, improve after their disappointing performance in the opening period.
“This is why I wanted this match,” Bellamy stated. “I need to see our standing. What are our ambitions? What is our identity? This performance gives me inspiration.”
Ollie Watkins was withdrawn at half-time after hitting a post and is a concern when England face Latvia in the Latvian capital in a World Cup qualifying match on next week.
