The Everton midfielder received a round of applause from his fellow squad members after issuing an explanation for his shocking dismissal during the recent victory at Manchester United.
The midfielder earned the distinction of being the first Premier League player to be sent off for hitting a teammate in 17 years when he slapped his defensive colleague during the match. Everton's display was heroic as they played with a man down for 85 minutes, including stoppage time, to achieve David Moyes' initial victory at Old Trafford as a visiting manager in multiple tries.
'I want to apologise first to Michael Keane,' Gueye stated on social media. 'I accept complete responsibility for my actions.'
Gueye was unable to secure an opportunity to speak with the manager or his teammates at half-time. Following the match, with the away dressing room celebrating after the 1-0 win, the veteran requested to address the whole team and Keane in particular.
Gueye may yet be punished by Everton despite Moyes' statement that he likes his team members competing with each other. Moyes has a regular punishment process for red and yellow cards, including financial penalties, which is expected to be applied in Gueye's case.
The Merseyside club may find themselves without their key midfielder until the new year. Gueye will complete a three-match ban against Newcastle, AFC Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest but could be selected for Africa Cup of Nations responsibilities by Senegal before he becomes eligible to play against Chelsea on mid-December.
'Passions can sometimes overflow,' he added. 'But nothing justifies such behaviour.'
At the same time, Mathijs de Ligt claimed United of showing no urgency in the recent defeat, which ended their winning streak at multiple matches.
United head to Crystal Palace for the weekend noon kickoff. 'Our upcoming match is absolutely crucial,' commented the defender. 'We must recover strongly from this display.'
